There are three primary credit reporting bureaus that are governed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Fair Credit Reporting Act of 1971 - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. These credit bureaus provide a database for creditors to report the credit history of their consumers. The database maintained by each of the 'big three' reporting bureaus are neither mutually exclusive nor are they individually comprehensive. You may find the same credit events reported on two of the databases but not the third, for example. Thus, if you seek to verify your credit history, or that of another consumer, you will want to check with all 3 credit bureaus. For this reason, many credit reports offered by full-service credit agencies will provide a comprehensive report that factors the history of all three of the big Three's databases.
